Quartzite gets misidentified constantly. People assume it’s engineered quartz, or a type of marble, or occasionally both at once. It’s neither. Quartzite is a completely natural metamorphic rock, formed when sandstone rich in silica gets subjected to extreme heat and pressure deep within the earth’s crust. What comes out is something genuinely extraordinary: a stone with marble’s visual character and a hardness that approaches or exceeds granite.

That combination is rare. Most stones that look this good are relatively soft. Most stones this hard don’t look nearly as interesting. Quartzite sits in a category almost entirely by itself.

The Key Difference From Marble

If marble has put you off because of the maintenance, particularly the etching, quartzite is worth a serious look. Unlike marble, it won’t etch on contact with acidic kitchen spills. Lemon juice, vinegar, wine: these will just sit on the surface waiting to be wiped off rather than leaving permanent marks. It’s a meaningful practical difference, especially in a working kitchen.

Sealing and Care

Porosity varies quite a lot between quartzite varieties, some are near-impermeable, others benefit from regular sealing. We’ll advise you on the specific stone you choose. As a rule: seal on installation, test annually with the water droplet method, and clean with a pH-neutral stone cleaner. Wipe spills up when they happen rather than leaving them to sit.
