Granite has been the workhorse of the natural stone kitchen for decades, and it earns that reputation. It’s formed deep within the earth under extraordinary heat and pressure, which is a slightly roundabout way of saying it’s one of the toughest materials you can put in a kitchen. It handles scratches. It handles heat. It handles the kind of daily punishment that softer stones simply wouldn’t survive.

Each slab is a product of its geological history, a unique mix of quartz, feldspar, mica, and other minerals that creates the characteristic sparkle and depth you don’t get anywhere else. There’s no factory producing a copy. What you’re getting is genuinely one of a kind.

The Practical Case for Granite

Hot pans straight from the hob? Fine. Cutting directly on the surface? We’d still recommend a board, mainly to preserve the polish, but the stone itself won’t complain. Seal it on installation, reseal every year or two, and clean it with mild detergent, that’s more or less the full maintenance commitment. For a material that’s expected to last a lifetime, that’s a pretty good deal.

Hardness: sits at 6–7 on the Mohs scale, harder than most kitchen knives

Heat resistance: direct contact with hot pans is fine

Stain resistance: very good when sealed; seal on install and annually thereafter

Finishes: polished, honed, leathered, or flamed

Thicknesses: 20mm and 30mm standard
